Gary Cooper has been working with wood for over 30 years and Cooper’s Wood Studio is located in beautiful Kettle (Cumberland County), Kentucky, in the Dale Hollow Lake region.
Specializing in band-sawn boxes of varying shapes, sizes and woods to hold your special keepsakes, jewelry or to just empty the contents of your pockets at the end of the day, he also creates lamps, tables, bookcases, musical instrument display cabinets and sculptural works. From log to finished piece, attention to detail and fine craftsmanship is evident in every creation from his one-man shop. Gary deals with local sawyers and kiln-dries his own local hardwoods; mainly native cherry, walnut, oak, sassafras, sycamore and maple. “I listen and let the wood tell me what it desires to be. My finishing techniques are time consuming but result in work people love to look at and touch.” A juried exhibiting member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, the Sheltowee Guild of Artists and Craftsmen and The Kentucky Craft Marketing Program, he also belongs to the Tennessee Association of Craft Artisans and The American Crafts Council, and ArtWorks Coalition in Bowling Green. Gary’s woodworking can be found at the Kentucky Artisans Center in Berea, the Kentucky Museum Gift Shop in Bowling Green, ARTique Gallery in Lexington, True Kentucky in Glendale and the Highland Raku Studio and Gallery in Columbia, Kentucky. Commissions are accepted and visits to Cooper’s Wood Studio are by appointment only. Visit his website at www.artmusic.net to see more photos of his work and shop. |
