metal – blacksmith

Blacksmithing is the transformation of iron by fire and hammer. It is an ancient craft which has only recently been revitalized in the United States. Iron has strength no other material has, and yet has the capacity for being graceful and beautiful. My process is hand forging using coal and gas forges, and traditional methods of joinery. Forging with hand tools yields irregularities which provide much of the character of forged ironwork. Each piece is unique, and bears the singular marks of its creation. I like to accent ironwork with elements of nonferrous metals, such as copper and bronze; and occasionally other materials such as wood and stone. I also do enameling on iron and copper as decorative components. My penchant is simple uncluttered designs which are typically robust and often medieval or tribal in nature.
About David Hufford I’m a member of the Artist Blacksmiths’ Association of North America, and one of the founders of the Bluegrass Artist Blacksmiths’ Guild. Iron seems a simple metal, but in its nature are many mysteries. |
