Scrolled Wood Art

I was born and raised in the Midwest. I moved to Kentucky over 20 years ago and immediately fell in love with the beauty of the land and the friendliness of the people. I specialize in designing and creating wooden art portraits with an emphasis on illustrating the beauty of Kentucky. I began scroll sawing approximately 5 years ago. I am self-taught, and my experience has been gained through thousands of hours of trial and error. I initially started making ornaments for our Christmas tree and became totally enamored with the craft. I soon began cutting plaques, clocks, boxes, and other wooden accessories. After a few years I progressed to portraits. It was with the wooden portraits that I found my niche and began developing my own creations. My Process I begin by using my own photos or free public domain photos. I often combine two or more photos or free draw portions of the pictures to achieve the outcome I am looking for. These picture objects are then converted into a black and white pattern using computer software. A great deal of patience is involved to bring forth a workable pattern, it is essential that the entire pattern be “connected” so that it will stay together when cut, but that it still retains the essence of the picture I am creating. Once the pattern is complete it is applied to the wood and carefully cut. After the cutting is done the piece is sanded and a felt backing is applied. The portrait is then matted and framed creating a unique piece of artwork that can be enjoyed for generations. My work can be seen at the following Gift Shops and Galleries:
