Wood Turner

Even though my profession is Dentistry, I have always had a fondness for wood. My first experience with wood turning came when I was in middle school. Wood turning was a hobby of sorts for me. Then upon completion of my Dental Education in 1995, I began to more vigorously pursue the Art of Wood turning. Having never attended any wood turning classes or seminars, I am basically a self-taught wood turner. However, I did receive some instruction from my father, Jim Waugh, who in addition to being an accomplished wood turner and master furniture maker, has vast experience in custom cabinetry and architectural millwork. I also studied Art extensively while in college and I feel this experience assists me with form and design. I enjoy using local domestic woods as well as rare burls and exotics from around the world. My philosophy is that the wood itself is inherently beautiful in its natural form. I strive to do nothing that would ever belie that natural beauty but instead, I seek to artistically shape the wood into a form that accentuates its beauty. |
