Overview

In this class you will learn the art of Silversmithing using sterling silver sheet, wire and hard solder.

The student will learn to use of torch, hammers, jewelers saw, flex shaft, pickle pot and other hand tools.

Students will learn how to design, pierce, saw, form, texture, solder, file and polish sterling silver.

They will also learn bezel making and setting a stone.

The students will make long short necklace and a bezel set pendant, with matching earrings.

Goals

To gain a basic understanding of silversmithing, tools involved, properties of metal and reaction to heat and finishing process..

 

Flow of Classes

Day 1: December 3

Explain process, show examples, get design ready to mark on metal. Draw design on silver sheet, pierce and saw out, make & solder bezel wire. Coil and cut wire for necklace. Solder chain links for necklace. Solder bezel wire to sheet, file, sand and rough polish. Start formation of bail, construct bail.

Day 2: December 4

Finish S-hook closure for Chain. Use remaining chain links to make pair of earrings. Tumble polish chain and earrings. Solder bail to pendant top, file, sand and polish. Set cabochon, finish any final texturing and polish the whole pendant.

To gain a basic understanding of silversmithing, tools involved, properties of metal and reaction to heat and finishing process..

Requirements

The student will need to have manual dexterity, see small items and have fair hand/eye coordination. We will be working with torch, saw, hammers, flex shaft and other hand tools. Students to provide #2 Pencil, note book and plain drawing paper. Will have cabochon stones available for pendant, and purchase extra special cabochons from instructor. All other materials provided.
